Why are Texas property taxes so high?

Texas has no state income tax, so property taxes carry a larger share of local funding — commonly 2.0–3.0% of assessed value depending on ISD and MUD. It has a direct effect on how much home you can afford, so we quote payment with a real Texas tax number, not a national default.
